Porcelain Veneers Replacement: Dental Care Maintenance

Toronto Porcelain Veneers Replacement

Dr. Sol Weiss has helped countless patients in and around the greater Toronto area with their dental health needs. There are many different cosmetic and restorative dentistry options to consider to meet the needs of patients. One of the most popular and versatile treatment options is porcelain veneers, which are an ideal option for chips, cracks, stains, and gaps. We’d like to consider the overall lifespan of porcelain veneers and how the replacement process for veneers works.

The Lifespan of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are very durable, but they do not last forever. The general lifespan of porcelain veneers is around 10 years, though with good dental hygiene and care, porcelain veneers can last up to 15 years.

Given this lifespan of porcelain veneers, they will need to be replaced to ensure a beautiful smile and that your dental health is its very best.

Why Porcelain Veneers Only Last for a Certain Amount of Time

There are many reasons why porcelain veneers have a limited lifespan. The main reason is that porcelain veneers are subject to the same kinds of wear and tear that your natural teeth are, which will cause damage at a certain point.

Some common causes of porcelain veneers damage include the following:

  • Normal biting and chewing
  • Sports injuries
  • Vehicle accidents
  • Biting hard/inedible objects
  • Tooth grinding (bruxism)

Porcelain Veneers May Need Removal Due to Tooth Decay

It should also be noted that your porcelain veneers might have to be replaced because of tooth decay around the veneer. In order to treat the tooth decay and prevent further damage to the tooth structure, it’s important that dentists remove the porcelain veneer and address the problems with a restoration as needed. Dentists will not be able to sufficiently treat the tooth decay if the veneer remains in place.

The Process for Replacing Porcelain Veneers

The process for replacing your porcelain veneer or multiple veneers is like the initial process for placing a porcelain veneer.

First, the old veneer is removed. The tooth structure beneath the veneer is then carefully prepped for the new veneer. Your dentist will work carefully and conservatively in order to retain as much tooth structure as possible. An impression is then taken of the prepped tooth and the new porcelain veneer is crafted from this impression.

When the new veneer is crafted, your dentist will check them one last time for fit and matched color. When the look and fit of the veneer are verified, it is then adhered in place securely.

Tips for Prolonging Porcelain Veneers Lifespan and Preventing Damage

In order to prolong the life of your porcelain veneers, we recommend the following:

  • Brush at least twice a day
  • Floss at least once a night
  • Wear mouth protection when playing sports
  • Avoid chewing on inedible objects
  • Quit smoking and using tobacco products
  • Visit your dentist for regular dental checkups
