Invisalign® Treatment Timeline – Toronto, ON
If you are considering Invisalign®, you may be hesitant because you do not know exactly what to expect from the process. Dr. Sol Weiss can provide you with an estimated treatment timeline, walking you through every step of the process. Typically, Invisalign® will take about 12 months to achieve the final results. Of course, treatment times can vary significantly. The exact process will depend on your current dental alignment and how often you wear your aligners. Fortunately, Invisalign® is discreet and comfortable for all patients. Plus, it typically requires fewer visits to the dentist than traditional braces. Therefore, even if your treatment takes longer than initially expected, it will still be very convenient. Two Weeks before You Begin Treatment
Two weeks before you are ready to begin treatment, you will come in to the office for a planning session. Dr. Weiss will take digital impressions of your teeth, using advanced 3-D imaging. He will then upload the images to a chairside computer, where he will design your aligner trays. You will be able to watch the entire process. Dr. Weiss will show you the projected movement of your teeth, explaining exactly what you can expect during every stage of the process.
When your designs are finished, Dr. Weiss will send them to the lab, where technicians will craft your aligners. It will usually take about two weeks for the technicians to create your trays and send them back to our office.
Weeks 1 and 2
It may take a week or two to adjust to the feel of aligners in your mouth. The trays will exert a gentle pressure on your teeth, so during this initial period, you may experience some minor discomfort. However, most people feel that Invisalign® is more comfortable than braces, and you can usually control this discomfort with mild, non-prescription pain medication. Remember, Invisalign® trays are removable. Therefore, you will not need to make any changes to your diet while you are undergoing treatment. After a week or two, you will typically have your first checkup with Dr. Weiss.
Week 2 through Month 12
Each tray will have a slightly different shape. Over time, they will gradually correct the alignment of your teeth. You should switch to a new aligner every two weeks. You will also have routine checkups with Dr. Weiss approximately every four to six weeks. He will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan, as needed. On average, Invisalign® will take about a year. However, if your teeth are not completely straight at the end of this first year, Dr. Weiss may provide additional trays to achieve optimal results.
Two Years after Your Treatment
Once you are through wearing aligners, you will need to wear a retainer. Orthodontic treatment changes the positions of your periodontal ligaments, which hold your teeth in place. It will take a while for the ligaments to adjust to those new positions. Without retention, they will quickly return to their old positions in your mouth. In most cases, you will need to wear your retainer after you finish treatment. Fortunately, Dr. Weiss can provide a retainer that is just as comfortable and discreet as your Invisalign® trays.
