Invisalign® for Teens – Toronto, ON
If you ever wore traditional braces with brackets and wires as a teenager, you know the issues associated with this orthodontic treatment. The brackets and wires can cut the inside of the mouth, causing discomfort. Certain foods, like apples and corn on the cob, are difficult to eat while wearing braces. Cleaning the teeth and flossing is more cumbersome with braces. While braces are still an excellent and effective treatment option for patients, the disadvantages of braces have led to the development of Invisalign®. Invisalign® consists of clear, removable aligners that straighten the teeth. This treatment can be performed on adults and teens. What Is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is an effective, comfortable alternative to traditional braces. The aligners can treat issues such as overbite, underbite, and overcrowding. Instead of having brackets bonded to the teeth and threaded with metal wires, patients wear clear, removable aligners to straighten their teeth. Instead of monthly office visits to have wires tightened, Invisalign® patients attend quick checkups every four to six weeks.
Patients wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, changing to a new set every two weeks. Since the aligners are removable, there are no restrictions on eating, and brushing and flossing are easy.
Invisalign® vs. Braces
Invisalign® treatment is typically comparable to traditional braces in cost, and is covered by many dental insurance policies. Treatment usually takes less time than braces and requires fewer visits to the dentist. Since the aligners are removable, brushing and flossing are much easier, resulting in better oral hygiene during treatment.
Benefits for Teens
Invisalign® offers many benefits for today’s teenagers. Because the aligners are virtually invisible, teens can have their teeth straightened without anyone even knowing. This saves your teen the self-consciousness that can be caused by wearing metal braces.
Additionally, Invisalign® offers a special product called Invisalign® Teen, specifically designed for patients in this age group. The makers of Invisalign know that it can be tough to get teens to wear their aligners for the required 20 to 22 hours a day. Since you can’t be with them all day to make sure they are wearing them as instructed, Invisalign® Teen aligners have a blue dot that disappears as they are worn. If the blue dot remains after the two-week period, you will know your child is not in compliance with his or her treatment plan. Invisalign® Teen also comes with six extra aligners for free, so if your child misplaces one, all you need to do is call the dentist and have a new aligner ordered.
