Neglecting to clean your teeth is one of the biggest and worst bad habits out there. Sure, you may be busy, but failing to clean your teeth for a long period of time can lead to so many significant health problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and to floss every night.
Brushing with the Wrong Kind of Toothbrush
It’s also important that you know what kind of toothbrush is ideal. Patients should consider toothbrushes with soft bristles. This help protect the gums from recession and irritation, and they also help gently polish the teeth without doing damage to the enamel over time.
Flossing Way Too Hard
Sometimes people just don’t floss their teeth properly. As with aggressive brushing, flossing too hard can result in damage to the gumline and eventual gum recession. Be sure to floss gently and thoroughly, and to do so every night.
Chewing on Hard or Inedible Objects
Many people have a nervous habit of biting their fingernails, chewing on pen caps or drinking straws, or chomping down on ice cubes. These can all wind up doing major damage to your teeth in the long run. It’s not just a social faux pas, but it can really result in some serious health issues later in life.
Opening Bags with Your Teeth
On the note of biting thing you shouldn’t, you can also do major damage to your teeth over time if you use your teeth to open bags or as a tool. Avoid doing this. There are scissors and so many other things that you can use that would be more effective, socially acceptable, and better on your teeth.
Using Tobacco Products
Smoking and using chewing tobacco will cause major issues with stained teeth and bad breath, and it can also raise of risk of developing gum disease. This is just another compelling reason to quit.
Constant Snacking on Sugary Items
If you do a lot of snacking on sugary foods, it actually increases your risk of developing a cavity. The oral bacteria that causes tooth decay just loves to feed on sugars. With that in mind, be sure to limit your snacking on candy and to avoid drinking sodas a much as possible.
Constant Thumbsucking as an Infant
Bad habits early in life can actually result in dental problems as you get older. If a child sucks his or her thumb for a long period of time, this can actually change the shape of the dental plant, and it can lead to issues with dental alignment and crooked teeth later in life.
