Addressing Stains and Discolouration
Even with good brushing and flossing habits, many of us still develop dental stains. Whether it is caused by foods and drinks, or a natural part of the aging process, you may find yourself searching for ways to restore your smile to a brilliant white. During your consultation, Dr. Weiss will discuss what is causing the discolouration and explain how Zoom!® whitening works.
Experience Zoom!® Teeth Whitening
Prior to Zoom!® treatment, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and a protective shield will be placed over your lips and gums. Once the treatment area is prepared, the Zoom!® hydrogen peroxide whitening gel will be applied to your teeth and activated with a specialized lamp. The combination of light and bleaching solution accelerates the process by penetrating and breaking up stains and discoloration on your teeth. After 15 minutes, the gel is removed and more solution is reapplied. Immediately after the final session, a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste will be applied to the teeth. Although some patients experience some degree of discomfort during in-office treatments, the Zoom!® light is designed to produce less heat than other systems. To help you maintain your bright new smile between treatments, Dr. Weiss will provide you with a Zoom!® take-home kit that includes customized whitening trays.
Although it is a safe and effective procedure, teeth whitening is not recommended for:
- Children 16 and under
- Women who are pregnant or nursing
- Patients with excessively worn enamel or very sensitive teeth
- Those with periodontal disease, tooth decay, or exposed roots
- Individuals who are allergic or sensitive to peroxide
- Intrinsic stains caused by certain antibiotics, including tetracycline
- Patients with unrealistic expectations about the treatment
It is important to note that restorations, including veneers, crowns, bridges, or fillings, will not respond to bleaching. If you are receiving a new restoration, your doctor may recommend that you first undergo whitening.
Benefits and Considerations
Although some patients may experience a brief tingling sensation when they get their teeth whitened, many feel the benefits are worth the potential discomfort:
- Brighter, whiter teeth
- Improved confidence
- A more natural, youthful-looking smile
Although teeth whitening can successfully remove extrinsic stains, how long the results will last depends on the patient. For example, certain lifestyle habits, such as tobacco use and the consumption of highly pigmented foods and beverages, including coffee, tea, wine, and cola, can hasten the accumulation of stains and discolouration. To help combat these surface-dulling stains, patients can schedule regular dental cleanings and modify habits that negatively impact the appearance of their teeth.
